The latest research is clear: the state of our attention determines the state of our lives. So how do we harness our attention to focus deeper, get distracted less, and even become more creative? Chris Bailey, author of the recent book Hyperfocus, talks about how our ability to focus is the key to productivity, creativity, and living a meaningful life.

Follow Chris on @chris_bailey Chris Bailey was recently described by TED as possibly “the most productive man you’d ever hope to meet”. He is the international bestselling author of Hyperfocus and The Productivity Project, which have been published in sixteen languages. Chris works with organisations around the globe on how they can become more productive without hating the process.

To date, Chris has written hundreds of articles on the subject of productivity, and has garnered coverage in media as diverse as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, New York magazine, The Huffington Post, Harvard Business Review, TED, Fortune, Fast Company, and Lifehacker. I've learnt so much from youtube. Without it I wouldnt be who I am now, but at the same time I know it distracts me from my goals and causes procrastination. Its such a double edged sword.

It puts a big plot twist to these devices. So these entertainment devices overstimulate our brain TO distract us. I’ve always considered that behind entertaining there’s a bigger agenda. The Latin origin of entertainment is “to hold “ and what other thing could it hold than your brain. That’s why people say that this generation is fried, we’re overstimulating the brain. I don’t believe in coincidence.

Personal: my focus was disrupted via chemical introduction. Regained via instense physical training. Altered focus induced via concentrated trauma. I am not trauma prone. I experienced a gamut of deeply sentient events, from iconic, to a volume of the same attacks.

Simple, not consume full attention, love doing → Attention Rest → Mind Wandering → Come up with ideas & plans. It explains why I often plan during and after taking shower. But playing harmonica, the ideas don't come up. Because I practice it, not good enough to enjoy it.

Great talk. I used to work with social media and it's been hard for me to get rid of it, but I noticed it makes me feel bad about myself, plus it occupies my time in a way I don't really want. Whenever I manage to be apart from it I feel motivated to learn, work on my projects, and even be truly social towards people (meeting people, making phone calls, texting while only paying attention to what that person is saying, etc.). This video just made me more willing to keep going. Thanks. I loved the picture at 12:00 too.

Ironically when I was trying to focus watching this video, a commercial pop up in the middle of this video that interested me to click for more.. TED Talk should put this kind of distraction after the video is finished so their watcher get maximum attention span, thus TED Ideas will impact better

I am watching this vid and still thinking how we lived without any distraction. Oke Even we stop using the mobile for awhile, not doing anything, just lay down on the bed, but stilll something just come up in my mind. Never let my brain stop to think and how I get focus

Appreciate the content A LOT! Though if you are like me and too many systems confuse you.. here are my two cents. I am an Ivy league MBA passout. We were taught to make fancy MODELS and STEPS so we can charge our clients more but when I opened my school in India and Italy and saw something else working better with my students.. something way simpler: we aren't productive and waste time because we don't have a good "connection" with ourselves and our goals. We just do many things without REALLY thinking about them. WHAT WE NEED is to spend some time with ourselves everyday planning the next day. Best way is to have a walk ALONE thinking about things to do tomorrow. VISUALIZE and make that connection. You'll also move a bit that will release the right hormones for you to have a positive connection with the next day's purpose!! So.. JUST have a walk and visualise. And thank me later. Best of luck guys!!

Thank you so much for your amazing speech. I have learnt a lot about how to focus better in the technology era which is full of distractions. I usually experience distractions many times a day. When I was working and I saw the phone buzzing or even just lighting, I would immediately picked up my phone, and then ya know, I surfed the social media for half an hour then :(( No good at all. Whenever i have a major task i wanted to do for that day, i just keep avoiding it by doing other smaller things. Tricking myself as i am being "productive". I wanted to get rid of that bad habbit of mine. I've been struggling for this problem for a long time. I did a to do list like some other youtubers recommended. But it's never been completely done although the tasks i assigned myself can be done in a day with just a few hours of commitment. Whenever i want to study, i will shut down my phone and computer. But i ended up doing housework. 😯 If anyone stumbled across my comment, feel free to voice your opinion. I would like to see what is your opinion on this🖐️

I need to forcefully distract my mind because when I don't find any form of stimulation, my mind races and the anxiety and overthinking turns into panic and I'll spiral out of control. I need serious help, not an app that limits screen time. I'll just find some other way to turn off the thoughts. Fun talk but it comes across super boomer and what works for this guy won't work for everyone

Why today's generation people is more dependent to technology system. In this pendemic, I am trying to avoid mobile or PC from using, but i can't😩, i really want to focus on my study😔. It really hard for me to stay away from digital world. Let's say for some min, i am trying not to use but the result will be the same,..again and again.., distraction, distraction and more distraction, can't even focus in one thing😔😔... i've been watching many insperation videos, for certain time i feel like, Oo yeah! Absolutely true! What an impact living in the digital age has on us, how we completely succumb to social media, in whatever form, for me personally I refrained from using my phone for 2 weeks, my focus was clearer, my perception, my mood improved and sleep also improved immensely, I read more books, and cognitively in this disconnection process felt so much more in tune with the real world, we have become much too dependent on social media etc, it distracts us from the present. Although there are advantages, the disadvantages are also important and need to be addressed in order to fully understand how our thinking is derailed via as he puts it overstimulation. It is highly addictive, dopamine hits but there is a certain freedom without it, or at least using it less.
